From the desk of Larry Teshara, Director
December, 2011
San Mateo Adult School continues to offer a unique set of
educational opportunities for those in our community. They
are represented by the four smiles on our cover: Secondary
Education (high school diploma and GED).
English-as-a-Second Language classes, health and fitness
classes for those fifty and older, and vocational and
community enrichment classes; most for very modest fees.
This year we will serve over 10,000 students. While that
number is down due to budget reductions, it does represent a
significant service to the mid-Peninsula community.
We are able to continue this service because of the support
of the San Mateo Union High School District Board of
Trustees and our Superintendent, Mr. Scott Laurence.
Like all school districts, we have taken some cuts. But
this administration acknowledges the importance of our
programs and is committed to maintaining our core services.
Truly, many thanks also go to you the SMUHSD
community who has consistently supported school bonds to
rebuild our six high school campuses. While the dollars from
those bonds cannot and are not being used for our program,
they clearly free up general fund money that would be needed
for infrastructure and capital improvements to support
instructional programs like ours.
So as we enjoy the holiday season, I give greetings and
thanks to you for your continued support of public education;
a vital link to our past, the enrichment of our current
lives, and the foundation of our future.
My best for the holidays and the new year.
Larry Teshara
