MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
It is my distinct pleasure to introduce
Scott Laurence, the new Superintendent of the San
Mateo Union High School District. He has been a strong
supporter of the Adult School and its service to the
community.
Larry Teshara, Director

I have the honor and the
privilege of being the new superintendent of the San Mateo
Union High School District. The District offers its students
a wide variety of educational options. We have six award
winning comprehensive high schools, a continuation program,
a Middle College program that allows students to attend
classes at the College of San Mateo while pursuing their
high school diploma and one of the largest adult education
programs in California. At every level we have dedicated
educators offering the opportunities our students need to be
successful in the 21st Century.
Over the past few months I have spent a large portion of
my time in the District listening and learning about our
programs and our staff. Mr. Teshara, the Director of the San

Adult School, has welcomed me with open arms to the Adult
School. This seems to be the standard and cultural norm of
the Adult School. The sense of welcome and family is
pervasive.
The students the Adult School serves come from all over the
mid peninsula. We provide a wide range of offerings to the
communities of San Bruno, Millbrae, Burlingame,
Hillsborough, San Mateo and Foster City. As you will see in
the brochure the Adult School offers a wide variety of
programs. We offer English as a Second Language programs,
vocational training programs, completion programs for
attaining a high school diploma as well as citizenship and
parenting programs. The commitment of the staff of the Adult
School to offer a diverse and needed curriculum dedicated to
the betterment of our community is commendable. The mission
to help our adult population to continue their education
supports the idea that education and self growth never ends.
Over the past few months I have had the good fortune to
observe the staff of the Adult School in the classroom, in
working meetings and during school social activities. In all
of my visits I have seen a passionate group of educators
that treat their students like family. You can feel and see
in the interactions on the site the ideal of continuous
improvement. You can also see and feel that this is a mutual
journey and that the staff and the students support and
respect each other.
I could not be more proud of the efforts of both the
students and staff of the adult school. I would highly
recommend that you look at the offerings in the brochure and
find something that servers your needs. I believe you will
find something that will stimulate your mind as well as
involve you in a culture of self improvement. I look forward
to seeing you on campus.
Sincerely,
Scott Laurence |
