ESL Video Checkout Procedures

Registration

Students may register directly with the distance learning teacher by dropping in during class time. They may also register at the SMART Center only during the times listed below:

    • Monday to Friday 8:30 AM to 12:00 noon
    • Monday to Wednesday 6:30 to 8:30 PM

CASAS Testing

Students who are not enrolled in a conversation class should take the listening test as soon possible after they first register and then again after completing a series of videos. For Crossroads Cafe, testing should be done after tapes 13 and 26.

Tests should be given to our CASAS Testing Expert, Betty Chen.

Attendance

New Students: Students should only be marked new if they do not have a folder (either active or inactive). This is because they only need an orientation if they have never attended a video checkout class before. DO NOT mark a student as new if they have attended another teacher's class even if it is their first session with you.

Videos: Place one check mark for each unit COMPLETED SATISFACTORILY (not merely assigned) under the proper column of your monthly attendance report.

Audio Tapes: Write the number of hours it took students to complete their work satisfactorily for the week under the column heading of the tape they are using. We will collate the results and eventually have a uniform number of hours per lesson when we have enough data.

Extra Hours: You may assign work over of up to 5 hours and above the work designated for each video. For each additional hour of work, place one check mark on your monthly attendance report under "extra hours" . Please note that this is not substitution for regular work assigned with each video. If you decide to substitute a regular assignment with a comparable workload, this is not considered extra. You should only credit the student with the regular unit.

Appointments

You may decide whether or not you want to make appointments for specific times. Alternatively, students can make an appointment for a class and drop in anytime you are free.
