My name is Aleth Reilley. I have been teaching ESL classes at the San Mateo Adult School since 1988. I teach a high advanced class in the evening, a citizenship class two mornings a week and joined the Distance Learning Center team a couple of months ago.
I was born, raised and educated in France and came to California some thirty years ago. My family and I have lived in San Mateo all this time, our children attending local schools and UC Universities. At first I was an "at home mom" but decided to go back to University to earn a Montessori diploma, then a California teaching credential and a Master of Education at the College of Notre Dame in Belmont. I taught French in elementary private schools in Burlingame and San Mateo.
I have always enjoyed learning and made languages my specialty, starting in High School in France, so teaching ESL classes is a pleasure for me. I obtained my degree at the Universite' de Nancy and did graduate work in US history and government at the Universite' de Paris, La Sorbonne. I have studied, in addition to French and French literature, Latin, classic Greek, Old English, modern English, Italian and some Spanish and German. Before coming to this country, I worked as a translator and visited or lived in France, England, Germany, Italy and Spain.
I love to read, in French or English, travel, garden, cook, take nature walks, especially in the forest or on the beach, visit museums and historic houses, and play with my grand children. I like to compare customs in the different countries I visit, in person or through books, especially as they relate to family and women's role and rights.
I still have many projects to tackle: visit Ireland, Scotland and the Hebrides, the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey, Brittany, and the South of Spain; go back to Canada and Hawaii, especially the Big Island; go on a women only llama packing trip in the California hills with my two daughters and my grand-daughter; write a family cook book from the recipes transmitted by my grand-mother and mother; make a full size quilt or two, entirely by hand; and more.
In the mean time I get great satisfaction in meeting and helping our wonderful, ambitious, tenacious students who work full time, either in the work force or at home, and carve time in their life to come to school and study to better their life and their family's.
