Assignment 1
English Topic: Introductions
Computer Skill: Basic Webpage: index.html
Part 1: To save time, take time to plan. It can be very frustrating to have all of your links working and then find out that you have to change every single page again! This lesson will help you to understand the basic structure of a webpage and start planning your own.
Exercise 1: Let's look at our school webpage. As a class, we will create a simple tree diagram showing how it is organized.
Exercise 2: Now let's look more closely at how to find a specific page. You are looking for a community-based computer class that we offer at Turnbull Learning Academy. Complete the diagram in pairs. Notice that this diagram is more complicated than the first one we made. This is how the web is organized - like a spider web!
Exercise 3: Now you must decide on what kind of webpage you would like to make. Create a diagram showing at least 4 subsections. One subsection MUST have a form. You may want this to be your contact page. You must write an introductory paragraph about your site and what a visitor will be able to find there. Submit it to me on a sheet of paper with your name.
Part 2: Now you are ready to make your homepage. You will use the free Pagebuilder software and web space from Yahoo.
- Sign up with Yahoo Geocities.
- Click on Yahoo Pagebuilder.
- Choose a design from PageBuilder Templates or Popular Themed Templates. Choose wisely, you don't want to have to start over again!
- A little window will pop up. Wait until the page you want has finished loading.
- Create one page for each section of your website. Remember that you want the same style to be on all the pages so that when visitors read your pages, they know when they are still looking at your pages or have left your site and are looking at a linked page.
- Save each page with a different file name. Do not keep saving your pages under the same file name.
Assignment 2
English Topic: Making suggestions
Computer Skill: Accessing your page and Formatting
In this lesson you will type the introduction for each page, format text and choose colors.
You may also bring items for me to take pictures of or you may bring your own digital pictures on a diskette. BE SURE TO GIVE ME YOUR DISKETTES BEFORE YOU USE THEM. I will scan your diskettes for viruses. You will use the pictures during the next class.
Always go to PREVIEW and check your links. If you have extra time left, now would be a good time to find pages to link to on the web so that your visitors can find more information. Make sure to copy the URLs exactly as they appear.
Assignment 3
English Topic: Reasoning
Computer Skill: Adding and Formatting Digital Images
YOU MUST HAVE AT LEAST ONE IMAGE FOR EACH PAGE.
- Form small groups, show your groupmates your pictures or items. Explain why you have chosen those items for each of your pages. Your groupmates will ask questions, give suggestions and comments about your choices.
- Upload your pictures. You may need to rearrange your pages a little.
- Every image must have a screen tip.
- Add a mouseover to at least 2 pictures.
Assignment 4
English Topic: Asking for Information
Computer Skill: Page Effects & Creating Forms
Remember: Less is sometimes more!
- Try a few page effects. You must have one for every page.
- Create a form for inquiries or for people to contact you without having to tell them your email address. The form should have at least:
Assignment 5
English Topic: Presenting
Computer Skill: Links
Congratulations! This is your last assignment. Link your pages together and prepare to present your finished page to the class.
