Advanced Excel for ESL
Welcome to Intermediate Excel for ESL Students. This class is designed for Intermediate or Advanced students of English as a Second Language who already have some experience using computers. If you do not have any experience or very little confidence using computers, you should start with an Internet, Email, or Word class. All students must attend the first class session. Available seats will be given to wait-listed students.

Assignment 1

English Topic: Sports
Computer Skill: Review of Basic Skills & Hyperlinks

Keep up-to-date with information about your favorite sports league. Look at this sample. You will need to merge cells and center some text both horizontally and vertically. Create hyperlinks under the column "More Info." Click on this link to see a list of hyperlinks.

Assignment 2

English Topic: Time
Computer Skill: Working with Dates, Headers & Footers

Interview your classmates and find out their birthdates including month, day and year. Create a worksheet that calculates the number of days your classmates have been alive and how many days until their next birthday. You will need the following columns. You will need to use the TODAY function for columns 4 and 5.

  • Name
  • Birthdate
  • Birthday
  • Number of days alive
  • Number of days until the next birthday

Under the worksheet, use dates in as many different kinds of calculations you can think of. Be creative. When could you use dates?

Assignment 3

English Topic: Stocks
Computer Skill: Charts

Due to popular demand (actually just a few students), this lesson will allow you to explore the stock market online and practice your Excel chart making skills.

Open Internet Explorer and go to yahoo.com. Click on "Finance". Search for the stock report of 5 companies:

To find the stock symbol, click on "Symbol Lookup", then type in the name of the company. For example, if you want to find the stock report of Pepsi, type in "Pepsi". Go back to the Yahoo finance page and type "PEP". Choose "Reports". Choose the type of report that interests you most and then do the same for 4 other companies. Please do not print out all the reports. You can type the information directly into an excel worksheet.

Create a worksheet using the information you have gathered. Then use the information to create a chart. Create a descriptive title for the chart and make sure that the chart has a legend. Use print preview to make sure that chart will print correctly, but DO NOT PRINT.

Choose a partner to help you proofread your work and give suggestions. Now you may print.
