The San Mateo Bridge
Objectives
The creation of The San Mateo Bridge will achieve the following specific outcomes:
1.Functional illiterates will have a tool that will aid in the interpretation of previously indecipherable written language which we will present in context;
2.English as a Second Language speakers will have a convenient resource for the development of language necessary for life within the San Mateo community; and
3.Immigrant populations of San Mateo will have content in which to interpret their native culture into their new, American, culture;
As evidenced by the completion of online tutorials with real life activities:
4.Residents will access community resources in meaningful ways;
5.There will be increased confidence and awareness leading to civic engagement; and
6.English as a Second Language speakers will better be able to communicate with other sectors of the community.
With the availability of laptops for home use:
7.Parent education and family literacy will develop as laptops are used by any or all members of the family;
8.The economically disadvantaged will develop skills necessary for professional advancement; and
9.San Mateo residents will have the ability to improve their quality of life through education, even though they are unable to attend traditional classes due to lack of finances, employment schedules, difficulties associated with transportation or location, physical handicap, family responsibilities, lack of family support, or because they are forbidden by family members.
Through ongoing maintenance and continuous updating and expansion of "The San Mateo Bridge":
10.All information will be up-to-date; and
11.Lessons will continuously be improved to respond to users' needs and the development of relevant educational practices.
