Better Balance: Improve your balance by practicing simple, effective exercises to increase your strength, enhance your flexibility, improve posture, and strengthen core muscles.
 

2012 CLASS FEES Unless Otherwise Noted

  Students: 65 years or older   $30 for one course per semester  
  Students: 50 - 64 years   $50 for one course per semester  
  Students: Under 50 years   $75 for one course per semester  

Aerobics Low-Impact Guest Pass Accepted
Thirty minutes of moderate aerobic exercise to toe-tapping music from decades past and present, followed by 30 minutes of stretching and strength training with weights or resistance tubing. Class may also include mat work, exercises on the Swiss ball, or balance exercises.
Guest Passes accepted.

Learn exercise techniques to tone and strengthen your “core” and postural muscles, increase your upper body strength, and improve your flexibility and balance. Please note: participants must be able to maintain relative balance while seated on a large stability ball and be able to get down to the floor for mat exercises.  Please bring your own exercise ball and mat. (Go to www.fitnessmuse.com for information about what size stability ball to purchase.)

Simple Steps to better Balance Guest Passes accepted
Improve your balance by practicing simple, effective exercises to increase your strength, enhance your flexibility, and improve your posture.  You will perform movements seated, standing, and gait exercises designed to increase functional balance skills and help you carry out daily activities with renewed confidence and ease.  The 60-minute balance segment is followed by a 30-minute brain fitness program designed to engage the brain in novel and challenging exercises to help improve memory, stretch your creativity, and improve your mental agility. Guest Passes accepted.

Better Posture

Teach your body to resist the effects of time and gravity and reduce your risk of falls and fractures. In this evidence-based program developed by UCSF physical therapist Wendy Katzman, you will learn proper body mechanics and postural alignment, practice exercises to improve your posture and balance, and strengthen your back and core muscles with resistance training. Please note: you must be able to get down to the floor for mat exercises. Please bring a pillow and towel. All other equipment is provided, but you may bring your own mat if you prefer. Monday and Wednesday are separate series.  You can enroll in one series or both.

TAI CHI: PRACTICE THE EASE OF MOVEMENT AND
MINDFUL CONCENTRATION

Learn Tai Chi in a very supportive environment.  Tai Chi is a graceful, slow-moving exercise system that promotes muscle relaxation and flexibility by reducing physical tension and strain.  Tai Chi has been shown in clinical studies to improve balance and coordination, increase concentration and decrease stress levels.  Adult school 50PLUS teacher, Debbie Au R.N. has many years experience teaching Tai Chi to mature adults.

YOGA FOR HEALTH Guest Passes accepted
Practice beneficial yoga postures designed to increase your range of motion, augment flexibility, enhance vitality, and strengthen your sense of inner calm. Monday and Thursday classes incorporate the use of chairs, resistance bands, and yoga blocks. Wear comfortable clothing. Bring a towel, small blanket and yoga mat.

GUEST PASSES

You can purchase a set of four guest passes for $20.00 at the San Mateo Adult School or in class and receive a fifth one as a gift. One guest pass allows a student to attend one class.  A guest pass can be used for the following 50PLUS classes only:  Fitness Education, Health Topics, Current Events, Armchair Travel, Knitting, and Music Appreciation. Passes are not applicable to classes that feature ongoing projects, and involve use of supplies, such as Painting, Drawing, Ceramics and Sewing.  Purchase a set of guest passes for yourself; or to have a few on hand to invite a friend or visiting relative to class.  It is a great way to sample many of our class offerings.
