Painting in Watercolors:
Class open to beginning and experienced painters. Try your hand at a landscape, seascape, still life or other themes of interest to you.
 
 
HAND KNITTING And Design
$65 Ages 65 and older $85  Ages 50 through 64 $95 Ages 49 and younger

Interested in learning how to create your own knitted garments and gifts? Give it a try. Learn basic or advanced knitting skills. Complete an introductory project, or learn new techniques to add to your current skills. Learn to read the pattern books to create designs that inspire you. Bring size 7 single-point needles and medium weight worsted yarn. Intermediate knitters bring a project you are presently working on. The Thursday 6:15 - 8:45 pm class  at the San Mateo Senior Center has been added for beginner knitters. An accomplished designer Paola Trombetta has created a number of made-to-order knitwear fashions in her native country, Italy. Paola has established her talent and aptitude for design as a consultant for high-end knitwear designs for prominent companies in the garment industry in the U.S. and abroad. (Guest passes accepted) (No class 9/1, 11/26, 11/27) .

drawing and pastels

Learn how to design a drawing or painting exploring the basic tools of line, value, form, space and texture. We will experiment with layering pastels to learn the pros and cons of different blending techniques.  Students may use photo reference and can choose their own subject matter from landscape, still life, portrait and more. All levels welcome! (No class 11/27).

Supply list:  Drawing pencils (one hard and one soft), stick charcoal, 12" ruler, plastic eraser.  Set of chalk pastels (landscape or portrait) Rembrandt or Faber Castell is a good starter brand, pad of assorted colors of pastel paper, kneaded eraser, soft rags, photos you wish to paint.

Afternoon at the Opera

Join us for a thrilling 10-week opera appreciation course! We’ll study operas performed this season by the Metropolitan Opera in New York (broadcast LIVE to Bay Area movie theaters), San Francisco Opera, and Opera San Jose. Spell-binding stories. Passionate music. Sensuous performers. Great fun! Novices welcome.

Saturday, October 18:  Le Nozze di Figaro ~ Live broadcast from the Met to Bay Area movie theaters at 9:55 a.m. James Levine conducts this comedic masterpiece set in the Roaring 20‘s.

Monday, October 20:  Faeries and Demons with fabulous guest speaker Deborah Rosengaus.

Monday, October 27: Der Freischütz by Carl Maria von Weber.

Saturday, November 1:  Carmen by Georges Bizet ~ Live broadcast from the Met to Bay Area movie theaters at 9:55 a.m.

Monday, November 3:  The Death of Klinghoffer by John Adams with guest speaker Deborah Rosengaus.

Monday, November 10:  The Italian Girl in Algiers by Gaetano Rossini with entertaining guest speaker Brad Wade.

Saturday, November 16: The Italian Girl in Algiers - Live performance at Opera San Jose at 3:00 p.m.  - Join other classmates for lunch and opera in San Jose. Easy public transportation. Pre-opera talk at 1:30 p.m.

Monday, November 17:  Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg by Richard Wagner

Saturday, December 13: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg Live broadcast from the Met to the movies at 9:00 a.m.   - Some of the most exquisite music ever written underscores a light-hearted all-male singing contest with a girl as the prize. Stars Johan Reuter, Johan Botha and Annette Dasch with James Levine conducting.

Get all the tips, support and encouragement you need to finally put those memories to paper. Whether it’s your story or your family’s that you want to record, this fun and supportive class will help you do it. The only “experience” required is having lived past fifty! Whether you would like to work on memoir, creative non-fiction, fiction, or personal essays, come spend a few hours a week in a reflective class that will sharpen your writing skills. (No class 11/26, 11/28)

Guest Passes are a great way to sample many of our class offerings. Purchase a few guest passes for yourself, or to have a few on hand to invite a friend or visiting relative to class.

Guest passes can be used for the following 50PLUS - Mature Adult Program classes only:  Fitness Education, Health Topics, Knitting, and Music Appreciation. Passes are not applicable to classes that feature ongoing projects, and involve use of supplies, such as Painting, Drawing, Ceramics and Sewing.

  Guest Passes for fitness classes:   $6.00, or purchase a set of four $22.00
  Guest Passes for knitting classes:   $7.00, or purchase a set of four $25.00
