Join the fun! The San Mateo Adult School has a variety of classes located at the Foster City Recreation Center. Choose from knitting and sewing to yoga, Tai Chi, and Qi Gong.


 
 
FABRIC ARTS: SEWING 101
$65 Ages 65 and older $85  Ages 50 through 64 $95 Ages 49 and younger

This is a class for those completely new to sewing – for beginners and those with a little experience. You’ll be taught the best way to operate your sewing machine – an important first step in learning how to sew!  Lynn will introduce you to very simple but well designed projects.  Proceed with support at your own pace. As you begin to acquire more skills and confidence the projects become a little more challenging and make use of additional sewing techniques.   A few machines are available for class use. Students are encouraged to bring their own machines. $10 materials fee is payable to the instructor. (No class 5/26)

FABRIC ARTS: SEWING AND PATTERN MAKING

Construct garments and adjust patterns. Tailor your clothes and projects to reflect what you like. Learn how to achieve a perfect fit for your unique body! All levels, from beginning seamstresses to experienced sewers are welcomed. Beginners will be introduced to very simple projects. A few sewing machines are available; bring your own if you wish. Supplies will be discussed at the first class. $10 materials fee is payable to the instructor. (No class 7/4)

HAND KNITTING AND DESIGN

Interested in learning how to create your own knitted garments and gifts? Give it a try. Learn basic or advanced knitting skills. Complete an introductory project, or learn new techniques to add to your current skills. Learn to read the pattern books to create designs that inspire you. Bring size 7 single-point needles and medium weight worsted yarn. Intermediate knitters bring a project you are presently working on. The Thursday 6:15 – 8:45 class has been added for beginner knitters. An accomplished designer Paola Trombetta has created a number of made-to-order knitwear fashions in her native country Italy. Paola has established her talent and aptitude for design as a consultant for high end knitwear designs for prominent companies in the garment industry in the U.S. and abroad. (Guest passes accepted)

PAINTING AND DRAWING

Class emphasis is on enjoyment and skill development. Explore various media including watercolor, water-soluble colored pencils and pastels. Materials fee discussed at first class meeting.

QI GONG

A hybrid class with Qi Gong used as a meditative warm-up followed by light aerobics, weight work, and stretching.  Enjoy an hour of moving and strengthening your whole body.  All levels from beginners to advanced are welcome. Bring hand weights. Guest passes accepted

Tai Chi 101:  Beginning Zungu Chen Family Taiji
$42 Ages 65 and older $62  Ages 50 through 64 $82 Ages 49 and younger

Taiji has been shown in clinical studies to improve balance and coordination, increase concentration and decrease stress levels. This beginning class introduces the traditional Chen Taiji form and the silk reeling  exercises to  increase joint mobility and overall flexibility. Silk reeling exercises are the foundation of Chen Taiji. You will start by learning the first six postures, posture by posture, of the Zungu Chen Family Taijiquan (Lao Jia Yilu) First Form, widely acknowledged as the ancestor of all other Taiji styles. Under the skilled and supportive instruction of Debbie Au, these uncomplicated and beneficial postures will lead to a fine tuning of proper body alignment. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes…no sandals. No guest passes.

TAI CHI 102 INTENSIVE

(10-week): Continuing Zungu Chen Family Taiji (Tai Chi)

$60 Ages 65 and older $60  Ages 50 through 64 $60 Ages 49 and younger

Continuation of the Zungu Chen Family Taijiquan (Lao Jia) First Form, in a supportive limited class-sized environment. Each student will receive individualized attention.  Each class session begins with the silk reeling exercises for joint mobility and over all flexibility. You will then proceed to practice  the Tai Chi form placing emphasis on posture and balance. Class limited to 15 students.  Wear comfortable clothing and shoes.  Prerequisite: Beginning Zungu Chen Family Taiji 101 and instructor’s permission. Debbie Au, R.N. has many years experience teaching Taiji to persons of varying ages and abilities.  Debbie Au is a certified Chen Taiji instructor of direct Chen Family Taiji lineage by Chen Qingzhou, a 19th Generation Direct Descendant of Chen Family Taijiquan and the Chen Family Taijiquan School in Wenxin, China (birthplace of Chen Taiji). No guest passes.

YOGA FOR HEALTH

Practice beneficial yoga designed to increase your range of motion, augment flexibility, enhance vitality, and strengthen your sense of inner calm. Don’t be fooled by the gentle nature of yoga. Besides improving posture and flexibility, it strengthens bones. Yoga blocks and straps are available and can be used to assist you and support positions. Thursday’s 11-12:15 class at Foster City Rec Center concludes with fifteen minutes of meditation.  Wear comfortable clothing. Bring a towel, small blanket and yoga mat. Guest passes accepted.  (No class 5/26)

ZUMBA “GOLD”

Tone up, build strength, feel good! Dance is a great way to exercise! Join us every Monday and Tuesday morning and get your day off to a great start. Zumba “Gold” is an easy-to-follow, cardio based, lower impact, Latin-inspired dance-fitness class. The music is rhythmic and motivating, the movements are, by design, modified so all levels can participate. All classes conclude with strength training using hand weights. S. Funk is a Zumba certified instructor.  Guest passes accepted. (No class 5/26)

GUEST PASSES

Guest Passes are a great way to sample many of our class offerings. Purchase a few guest passes for yourself, or to have a few on hand to invite a friend or visiting relative to class.

Guest passes can be used for the following 50PLUS classes only:  Fitness Education, Health Topics, Knitting, and Music Appreciation. Passes are not applicable to classes that feature ongoing projects, and involve use of supplies, such as Painting, Drawing, Ceramics and Sewing.

  Guest Passes for fitness classes:   $6.00, or purchase a set of four $22.00
  Guest Passes for knitting classes:   $7.00, or purchase a set of four $25.00
  Guest Passes for the Opera class:   $15.00, or purchase a set of five for $60.00
