Join the fun! The San Mateo Adult School has a variety of classes located at the Foster City Recreation Center. Choose from knitting and sewing to yoga, Tai Chi, and Qi Gong.

FABRIC ARTS: SEWING FOR BEGINNERS                     $45/$45/$75

This is a class for those completely new to sewing – for beginners and those with a little experience. You’ll be taught how to operate your sewing machine – an important first step in learning how to sew!  Lynn will introduce you to very simple but well designed projects.  Proceed with support at you own pace. As you begin to acquire more skills and confidence the projects become a little more challenging and make use of additional sewing techniques.  Although there are a limited number of machines available for class use, students are encouraged to bring their own machine. $10 materials fee is payable to the instructor. (No class 5/28)

ALTER, and STYLE


Construct garments and adjust patterns. Tailor your clothes and projects to reflect what you like. Learn how to achieve a perfect fit for your unique body! All levels, from beginning seamstresses to experienced sewers are welcomed. Beginners will learn to measure themselves and make simple patterns.  A few sewing machines are available; bring your own if you wish. Supplies will be discussed at the first class.
$10 materials fee is payable to the instructor.

HAND KNITTING & MACHINE KNITTING                    $45/$45/$75

Learn basic or advanced knitting skills whether knitting by hand or working with a knitting machine!  Complete an introductory project, or learn new techniques to add to your current skills.   Learn to read the pattern books to create designs that inspire you. Interested in hand knitting? Bring size 7 single-point needles and medium weight worsted yarn. Machine knitters bring your knitting machine to class, or use one of ours. Intermediate or advanced knitters, bring projects you are presently working on.  (No  class 7/4)

Class emphasis is on enjoyment and skill development. Explore various media including watercolor, water-soluble colored pencils and pastels. Materials fee discussed at first class meeting.

NEWS AND VIEWS: DISCUSSIONS FROM                      $30/$50/$75
MULTI-CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES

Get involved in an ongoing discussion and analysis of Current Events. Explore national and international news events, as well as key issues that are shaping the world today. Some of those key issues can range from politics, finance and war, to Social Security and health care. Explore your ideas and share your opinion on issues that affect the world in which we live. Guest passes accepted. (No class 7/4)

QI GONG                                                                                $30/$50/$75

A hybrid class with Qi Gong used as a meditative warm-up followed by light aerobics, weight work, and stretching.  Enjoy an hour of moving and strengthening your whole body.  All levels from beginners to advanced are welcome. Bring hand weights. Guest passes accepted.  (No class 7/4)

TAI CHI:  A 10 WEEK INTENSIVE                                    $50/$50/$50

Learn Traditional (Zungu) Chen Tai Chi in a small class environment. Personal individualized attention given to each student. Class size limited to 12 students. Prerequisite:  Beginning Chen Tai Chi and student must be able to perform the first 6 postures correctly and independently.  Preregistration required.  50PLUS teacher, Debbie Au R.N. has many years experience teaching Tai Chi to mature adults. Guest passes not accepted.

Learn Tai Chi in a very supportive environment.  Tai Chi is a graceful, slow-moving exercise system that promotes muscle relaxation and flexibility by reducing physical tension and strain.  Tai Chi has been shown in clinical studies to improve balance and coordination, increase concentration and decrease stress levels.  Adult school 50+ instructor, Debbie Au R.N. has many years experience teaching Tai Chi to mature adults. YOGA FOR HEALTH                                                                                        $30/$50/$75

Practice beneficial yoga postures designed to increase your range of motion, augment flexibility, enhance vitality, and strengthen your sense of inner calm. Monday and Thursday classes use straps, and yoga blocks. Thursday’s class at Foster City Rec Center concludes with fifteen minutes of meditation. Wear comfortable clothing. Bring a towel, small blanket and yoga mat. Guest passes accepted.  (No class 5/28)

ZUMBA SERIES:  ZUMBA “GOLD” – BASIC STEPS     $35/$35/$35
8-Week Series

Zumba “Gold” is designed for students 50 and over who want to learn these fun, rhythmic, Latin inspired dance steps in a lively yet easy pace. The workout routines are varied and enjoyable. You’ll gain greater endurance, develop better muscle tone, feel happier, and look healthier. Stephanie Funk is a Zumba “Gold” certified instructor. Class will conclude with 15 minutes of strength training with hand weights.   Pre registration is required. The first day of registration is 4/23.  Register in person at San Mateo Adult School, by mail, or by fax. Please bring your own weights to class.

GUEST PASSES

You can purchase a set of four guest passes for $20.00 at the San Mateo Adult School or in class and receive a fifth one as a gift. One guest pass allows a student to attend one class.  A guest pass can be used for the following 50PLUS classes only:  Fitness Education, Health Topics, Current Events, Armchair Travel, Knitting, and Music Appreciation. Passes are not applicable to classes that feature ongoing projects, and involve use of supplies, such as Painting, Drawing, Ceramics and Sewing.  Purchase a set of guest passes for yourself; or to have a few on hand to invite a friend or visiting relative to class.  It is a great way to sample many of our class offerings.
