My First Day in the United States
By Chong Sobocan
I remember my first day in America. It was a long journey traveling from Korea to America. That first evening meeting the relatives and sampling unfamiliar and different kinds of foods was interesting. I was unaccustomed to eating meats and sweets. The first thing I noticed was the amount of food on the table. In Korea that much food would feed a family of five for a month. I also had the pleasant experience of an indoor bathroom facility. I didn't need to go outside to use the bathroom. I could quickly adapt to those good things without much practice, but how could I cope with language difficulties? I had so many things going through my head that I didn't enjoy a moment of being in America my very first day.
My First Job Interview
by Sari Hagleberg
I was applying for a job in a medium-sized textile factory. The job description was foreman. I hadn't had any experience managing or supervising employees, but it never hurts to ask. I had just graduated from the Technical School with pretty good papers, and I thought there could be some chance for me.
It was a sunny June morning, and I had worked through the previous night. Surely I was tired. The interview place was in another town, and I had to travel by train for two hours. When I finally reached the correct station, I had to walk a couple of kilometers, and I was exhausted.
The job interviewer was a very serious old man, but I couldn't care less. I almost fell asleep. The man asked me many important and grave questions about the job. I acted like a machine, words just coming automatically from my mouth. Of course, I didn't get the job, but I learned something. The night before a job interview, you really have to have good sleep.
The Birth of My First Born
by Maria Madera
The birth of my first born is the best gift I've received. Being pregnant was very exciting to me. Knowing I had a life growing inside of me made me feel so proud. I felt lots of movement and hard kicking. My appetite was huge, so I could eat as much as I wanted.
My daughter was born premature, weighing only 4 pounds and 6 ounces and 16 inches long. I had to take extra care of her.
She is now eight and a half years old and growing fast. She is a healthy child. Motherhood has made me into the mature person I am today. I look forward to my daughter growing up to be a young woman.
I love my daughter. She's my first best experience of life.
My First Love
By Janelle Black
His intriguing mind pulled suddenly and fearfully on my heart like a cowboy roping a bull in a rodeo. Recovering from a violent depression, I found in him my peace. I found someone to open up to so I could cleanse my hatred and resentment toward the world and all its injustice. I found my happiness, a best friend who crawled under my skin, looked behind my eyes and silently crept into my gut until I could feel this craving throughout my blood. He became someone to learn from and to teach, someone to keep an astonishing friendship. My darkness melted into a blazing sun, a ray of light always dwelling on me. I will always be reminded of an experience with benefits far beyond my own intelligence.
My First Day on a New Job
By Luz Elena De Angelo
I started working in this small company a few years ago. The first day was interesting to me because even though I got really nervous, it was not a complicated job. The first day I started putting instructions and ink refills in little plastic cases. I was working with four other people who were doing the same thing I was doing. We were working in a warehouse where they had merchandise like desk lamps, laser pens, and alarm clocks. I liked to work there because it was another way to learn more and practice my little knowledge of English. I found interesting people in the office when one of the co-workers took me there. The office and the warehouse were about a block apart. I started getting more confidence going to downtown San Francisco because it was the first time that I went by myself to the City. It was a little scary my first day because I was thinking as I was getting closer to this place, "What will I do if I get lost? Who am I going to call?" But everything worked out OK, and I worked there for more than six years.
My First Car
By Charlotte Carlsen
Emily is my car's name. Yeah, she came to me on the 15th of July this year here in San Mateo. I did not have a car in Denmark because cars are very expensive there. Well, Emily, whom I have now known for five months, has her own personality, but we have a great relationship. She was "born" in Germany in 1972, so she is getting old and is sometimes very, very stubborn. Her family name is Volkswagen. All the bugs have a very nice and round outlook.
This morning she did not want to run - it took forever to wake her up. Finally she was ready, but when I stopped at a stop sign, she fell asleep again. Yeah, it was very embarrassing; the car behind was irritated. But anyway, as I told you, Emily has her own personality.
She also smells quite bad because she is so old, and the heater no longer works properly. When I turn around corners, I have to have my little window open because the gas smell comes from the heater. It is normal to smell when you get old, I guess.
There are some times when Emily just doesn't want to go. I was shopping at Trader Joe's, and when I tried to start her, she did not cooperate. I was so mad! I had to call my boyfriend who knows her a little better than I. He said that I just had to wait 20 minutes and then try again. And, Yes, Emily was in a better mood, and we drove home with no more problems.
I love Emily very much, and I hope we can take many more trips together even though I know she is polluting and is getting more and more expensive to repair. But she is a great, old green lady. Toot! Toot!
My First Baby-Sitting Experience
By Andreia Alves de Lima
My first experience baby-sitting was with my little brother when I was 17 years old. It was completely new for me. It was a good experience because it helped me become more responsible. Now I'm using this experience to survive. I am here working as a baby sitter for twin girls who are 20 months old.
My First Car
By Jaime Zuluaga
Finally, I did it! My first car! I remember that day as one of the happiest days in my life. The car looked glorious, enormous, and powerful. Finally after years of sacrifice and hard work, I was able to save enough money for the down payment of my new car. In my country, different from the U.S., to get a car isn't easy. Normally it takes a long time before a young person can afford his/her new car
Until that day, I just occasionally drove my father's car, but now this beautiful European car was mine. Its white color and its beautiful shape were a temptation for me since the first time I saw it.
Of course, not everything was easy with my first car. First of all, I wasn't an expert driver, so occasionally I had some minor accidents, especially when I had to park the car in small places. Fortunately, I learned fast and with time I began to feel more confident and secure.
It was six years ago, but I can't forget my first beautiful white car.
My First Day in High School
By Jay Shin
My first day in high school was bad because I was a shy type of guy. My first day was hard because I had trouble getting to know people. I never went to people to get to know them; they always came to me. I started to know a lot of people, but I was still shy in class because I always had to go up in front of the class and introduce myself. The next day I started to make friends and shyness stopped because everyone I knew was in my class.
My First Car
By Jose Godinez-Parra
Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of having a car. When I was 21 years old I got it; that was my dream come true. I came to the United States when I was 20 and worked hard for a year as a groom on a horse farm. Then I went back to Mexico and bought a 1983 Volkswagen Jetta. Ten years later I still have that car because I took very good care of it. It was very important to take good care of my car because it was my first car. Many people asked if they could buy my car, but I said "no." My Jetta is still in my garage in Mexico.
My First Job Interview
By Chad Estis
Nervous, scared, hopeful were the feelings I had on my first job interview. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The employer made me feel very comfortable. The good part was that he interviewed my friend and me at the same time, so all of the attention wasn't focused directly on me. He alternated back and forth asking my comrade and me different questions. I could tell by how relaxed the atmosphere was that chances were we both had the job. My friend and I ended up receiving the job, and we started training that same day. I believe that all in all it was a good experience and a good outcome for my first interview.
